First and foremost is to determine what type of pruning is necessary to maintain or improve the health, appearance, and safety of trees. You should never top your trees, this will lead to multiple problems and hazards in the future, that is, if the tree survives! Different species of trees can endure different trimming methods as well.
Reasons of Pruning or Trimming a Tree:
- Eliminating branches that rub or crossover each other.
- Removing limbs that interfere with wires, building facades, gutters, roofs, chimneys, windows, or that obstruct streets or sidewalks.
- Removing dead or weak limbs that pose a hazard or may lead to decay, this is known as "Deadwooding."
- Removing diseased or insect-infested limbs. Limbs that are weak or decayed are more vulnerable to insect and pest.
- Creating better structure to lessen wind resistance and reduce the potential for storm damage.
- Training young trees.
- Removing limbs damaged by adverse weather conditions.
- Thinning or removal of branches to increase light penetration.
- Improving the shape or silhouette of the tree.
