You might think, "Trees grow in the forest just fine without anyone trimming them. Why do I need to pay someone to trim mine?"

That is a great question! In the forest, trees compete with each other for sunlight. They naturally shed lower branches as they grow tall. But in your yard, trees have plenty of space. This means they can grow wide, heavy, and sometimes a little weird.

Here is why regular tree pruning is essential for Spokane homeowners:

This is the big one. Dead or broken branches are accidents waiting to happen. We call them "widowmakers" in the industry because they can fall without warning. By removing these dangerous limbs, we protect your house, your car, and your family.

This is the cleanup crew. We go into the canopy and remove dead, dying, or diseased branches. We also take out "water sprouts" (those tiny, weak branches that shoot straight up) because they suck energy away from the rest of the tree.

Crown Thinning

If your tree is too thick, sunlight can't get to the grass below, and wind can't blow through the branches. We selectively remove inner branches to reduce the weight and let the light shine through. This makes the tree lighter and less likely to break under heavy snow.

Crown Raising

Are you tired of ducking every time you mow the lawn? Do branches scratch the top of your vehicles? Raising the crown means we cut off the lowest branches to create clearance for pedestrians, cars, and buildings.

Crown Reduction

Why We Never Top Trees!

If you hire a "tree guy" with a pickup truck and a chainsaw who offers to "top" your tree for cheap, please close the door.

Topping is when you just chop the top half of the tree off flat. It looks terrible, like a bad haircut. But worse, it ruins the tree.

1. It Starves the Tree: You just cut off all its leaves, which make its food!
2. It Causes Rot: The big open wounds at the top act like a funnel for rain and rot.
3. It Creates Monster Branches: The tree panics and shoots out dozens of weak, fast-growing stick branches that break easily.

We value your trees too much to ever top them. We use proper reduction cuts that keep the tree healthy and looking natural.

When is the Best Time to Prune?

This is a trick question because it depends on the tree!

For most trees in the Spokane area, winter is the best time. When the tree is dormant (asleep for the winter), it doesn't feel the shock of the cut as much. Plus, without leaves, we can see the structure of the branches perfectly. It’s like looking at a skeleton—we can see exactly what needs to be fixed.

However, dead branches can (and should!) be removed at any time of year. Safety never takes a vacation.
