Why Your Trees Need a Trim (It’s More Than Just Looks!)

You might think, "Trees grow in the forest just fine without anyone trimming them. Why do I need to pay someone to trim mine?"

That is a great question! In the forest, trees compete with each other for sunlight. They naturally shed lower branches as they grow tall. But in your yard, trees have plenty of space. This means they can grow wide, heavy, and sometimes a little weird.

Here is why regular tree pruning is essential for Spokane homeowners:

1. Safety First

This is the big one. Dead or broken branches are accidents waiting to happen. We call them "widowmakers" in the industry because they can fall without warning. By removing these dangerous limbs, we protect your house, your car, and your family.

2. Tree Health

Think of pruning like exfoliating your skin. We remove the dead wood, the diseased parts, and the branches that are rubbing against each other. This stops bugs and fungus from taking over. It also helps the tree breathe and get more sunlight to the leaves that really need it.

3. Curb Appeal

A well-trimmed tree looks great and adds value. It can frame your house perfectly. An overgrown tree hides your house and makes the yard look neglected. If you are thinking about selling your home, a professional trim is one of the cheapest ways to boost your property value.

4. Storm Protection

Spokane gets some crazy weather. We have heavy snow, ice storms, and those windstorms that seem to come out of nowhere. A tree with a thick, dense canopy acts like a sail in the wind. It catches all that force which can lead to it being pushed over and crashing down. By "thinning" the tree, we create holes for the wind to pass through, so the tree stays standing when the weather gets rough.

Tree Trimming vs Tree Pruning

You will hear people use these words interchangeably, and that’s totally fine. But technically, there is a tiny difference.

  • Tree Trimming usually refers to tidying up a shrub or hedge to make it look neat. It’s about the shape.
  • Tree Pruning is more about the health and structure of the tree. It involves selective cuts to improve safety and growth.

At A1 Stump Removal Spokane, we do both. Whether you want your hedges to look like perfect boxes or you need a 100-foot Ponderosa Pine cleaned up, we have the skills, equipment, and knowledge.

Our Tree Care Services

We don't believe in a "one size fits all" approach. Every tree is different. A fruit tree needs to be pruned differently than an oak tree. As ISA Certified Arborists, we know exactly what your specific tree needs.

Crown Cleaning

This is the cleanup crew. We go into the canopy and remove dead, dying, or diseased branches. We also take out "water sprouts" (those tiny, weak branches that shoot straight up) because they suck energy away from the rest of the tree.

Crown Thinning

If your tree is too thick, sunlight can't get to the grass below, and wind can't blow through the branches. We selectively remove inner branches to reduce the weight and let the light shine through. This makes the tree lighter and less likely to break under heavy snow.

Crown Raising

Are you tired of ducking every time you mow the lawn? Do branches scratch the top of your vehicles? Raising the crown means we cut off the lowest branches to create clearance for pedestrians, cars, and buildings.

Crown Reduction

Sometimes a tree just gets too big for your yard. It might be interfering with power lines, blocking your view, or simply overpowering the aesthetics of your yard. We carefully reduce the height or spread of the tree. Note: This is not topping (see below). We cut back to a lateral branch so the tree can keep growing naturally, just smaller.

Structural Pruning for Young Trees

We train young trees to grow with a strong central leader (trunk) and good branch structure. A little bit of work now prevents massive problems ten years down the road.

Why We Never Top Trees!

If you hire a "tree guy" with a pickup truck and a chainsaw who offers to "top" your tree for cheap, please close the door.

Topping is when you just chop the top half of the tree off flat. It looks terrible, like a bad haircut. But worse, it ruins the tree.

  1. It Starves the Tree: You just cut off all its leaves, which make its food!
  2. It Causes Rot: The big open wounds at the top act like a funnel for rain and rot.
  3. It Creates Monster Branches: The tree panics and shoots out dozens of weak, fast-growing stick branches that break easily.

We value your trees too much to ever top them. We use proper reduction cuts that keep the tree healthy and looking natural.

When is the Best Time to Prune?

This is a trick question because it depends on the tree!

For most trees in the Spokane area, winter is the best time. When the tree is dormant (asleep for the winter), it doesn't feel the shock of the cut as much. Plus, without leaves, we can see the structure of the branches perfectly. It’s like looking at a skeleton—we can see exactly what needs to be fixed.

However, dead branches can (and should!) be removed at any time of year. Safety never takes a vacation.

There are some exceptions. For example, flowering trees (like lilacs or crabapples) should be pruned right after they bloom so you don't cut off next year's flowers. As your local Spokane arborist, we can create a schedule that works best for your specific landscape and needs.

Safety Comes First

Tree work is consistently ranked as one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. It often involves climbing to great heights, while using sharp power tools, and dealing with heavy machinery.

Please, do not try to trim a large tree yourself! We have seen too many homeowners on wobbly ladders trying to use a chainsaw. It is not worth the risk!

Our team is trained in high-angle rescue, proper rigging, and chainsaw safety. We wear helmets, chaps, and safety glasses. We use ropes to lower heavy branches slowly so they don't smash your fence or your prize-winning petunias. And most importantly, we are fully licensed and insured. If something goes wrong (which it won't, but just in case), you are protected.

Commercial Tree Trimming

We don't just help homeowners. We also work with businesses, property managers, and HOAs in Spokane and Spokane Valley.

If you own an apartment complex or a retail store, your trees could be a liability. If a branch falls on a customer's car, that is a bad day for everyone. We can set up a maintenance plan to keep your property safe, tidy, and professional. A little bit of prevention goes a long way to keep your business, and clients, happy. Well-maintained trees tell your customers that you care.

  • How much does tree trimming cost in Spokane?

This is the most common question we get! The honest answer is: it depends. The price varies based on the size of the tree, how easy it is to get to (is it right next to the driveway or in the back corner behind a fence?), and how much trimming is needed. A small fruit tree is much cheaper than a 100-foot Pine that hangs over your house. We offer free estimates, so we can come out, take a look, and give you an exact price and minimize any surprises.

  • Will trimming the tree hurt it?

Not if it is done right! In fact, proper pruning helps the tree. It removes the "dead weight" and encourages new, healthy growth. However, if you hire someone who doesn't know what they are doing (like someone who uses "climbing spikes" on a live tree), that can damage it. That is why it is so important to hire a Certified Arborist who follows industry standards.

  • Can you trim trees near power lines?

If the branches are touching the high-voltage lines on the telephone poles, that is usually the responsibility of the power company. You should call them first. However, for the service drop (the wire going from the pole to your house), we can usually trim around that safely. We will assess the situation when we come out for the FREE estimate.

  • Do I need to be home when you trim my trees?

Usually, no! As long as we have access to the yard (unlock the gate for us, please!), we can do the work while you are at work or running errands. We will treat your property with respect and clean up everything before we leave. We can settle the bill over the phone or online.

  • What do you do with all the branches you cut off?

We have a large wood chipper that eats branches for breakfast. We turn the debris into mulch. We haul this mulch away to be recycled. If you would like to keep the wood chips for your garden (they make great weed barriers!), just let us know, and we can leave a pile for you.

  • My tree looks sick. Can trimming save it?

Sometimes. If the sickness is isolated to a few branches (like a fungal infection), pruning those branches off can stop it from spreading to the rest of the tree. However, if the issue is in the roots or the trunk, trimming might not be enough. Our Certified Arborist can diagnose the problem and recommend the best treatment plan.
